Teide Summit Hike with Cable Car Ride
About this experience
The highest peak in Spain without the full day climb from the bottom. The cable car takes you to 3,555 m above sea level, and from there you walk with a guide along the Telesforo Bravo trail to the crater itself, at 3,718 m. The access permit, which cannot be bought on the spot, is included in the price.
What the trip looks like
You start with the cable car. A few minutes and you are above the cloud layer that usually sits over the coast. From the upper station you continue on foot, on the Telesforo Bravo trail that runs straight up towards the summit.
Along the way you pass the remains of the last eruption, around a thousand years ago, and black lava fields. The higher you go, the stronger the sulphur, and warmth rises from the ground at the fumaroles. From the top the view stretches over Tenerife and the neighbouring Canary Islands, as long as the clouds sit lower, which at this altitude they often do.
Your guide covers the volcano from two angles. The scientific one, how the cone formed and what current measurements show, and the older one, how the Guanches, the island’s indigenous people, read the eruptions as a fight between their gods.
The ticket also includes the Science and Legend exhibition at the cable car Visitor Centre. In the same building you can rest, buy souvenirs and eat at the highest restaurant in Spain, looking out over Teide National Park.
Who this is for (and who it is not)
This is for people in good shape, from the age of 6 upwards. The walk is short, but it happens at an altitude where the air is thin, and everyone feels that.
The trip is not available to pregnant women or people with cardiovascular conditions, because of the health risks linked to altitude. It is also not recommended for anyone with reduced mobility or recovering from an injury. The cable car does not carry people with a physical or motor disability, because in the event of a technical fault everyone at the top station walks down steep trails and safe evacuation within the required time cannot be guaranteed. If you have any health concerns, speak to your doctor beforehand.
Practical information
Access to the crater requires a permit from a government body, which is only granted a few days after booking. That is why your final confirmation comes later rather than straight away. If the permit is not granted, we offer you another date or refund the full amount.
Transfers run from the Los Cristianos, Playa de las Américas, Costa Adeje, La Caleta and Puerto de la Cruz areas every day of the week, and from Los Gigantes, Puerto Santiago, Callao Salvaje and Playa Paraiso on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Tick that option in the booking form and give us your hotel name.
The trek is guided in English and Spanish. You can cancel free of charge up to 72 hours before the start. If you have questions about fitness or altitude, write to us before booking and we will answer straight.
