Roque Nublo – the symbol of Gran Canaria and the most beautiful trail in the heart of the island

roque nublo gran canaria

When most tourists think of Gran Canaria, they imagine golden beaches, turquoise ocean and sun-filled resorts. However, the true heart of the island beats much higher up – in the mountains, among forests and volcanic rocks. That’s where you’ll find Roque Nublo, a monumental stone monolith that for thousands of years has inspired awe, respect and… spiritual reflection.

It’s not only one of Gran Canaria’s biggest attractions, but also a symbol of the island – it appears on the island ‘s coat of arms, in the logos of many local organizations, and is a source of pride and sanctity for locals. In this guide, we’ll show you everything you need to know before you head to Roque Nublo:

What is Roque Nublo Gran Canaria?

Roque Nublo (Spanish for “Cloud Rock”) is a huge volcanic monolith in the central part of the island, rising 1,813 meters above sea level (the monolith itself is about 80 meters high). It is located within the Parque Rural del Nublo – one of Gran Canaria’s largest and most valuable natural areas, protected under the Natura 2000 network.

This place has great cultural and spiritual significance. For the indigenous Guanchen people of the island, it was a sacred mountain and a place of sacrifice. Today it attracts travelers, photographers and nature lovers from all over the world.

On sunny days, from Roque Nublo you can spot Teide, Tenerife’s majestic volcano, more than 100 km away!

How to get to Roque Nublo – route description

The most popular and easiest way to reach Roque Nublo is from the La Goleta parking lot, located on the GC-600 road, near the village of Tejeda.

How to get here

  • From Maspalomas (south of the island): About 1 hour 15 minutes drive on winding but well-maintained roads.
  • From Las Palmas (capital, north of the island): Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.
  • La Goleta’s parking lot is just off the trail – free, but it’s worth arriving in the morning, as it fills up quickly.

Roque Nublo Trail

  • Length: about 3 km (round trip)
  • Walking time: 1.5-2 hours
  • Difficulty level: easy / medium
  • Altitude difference: about 150 m

The route passes through beautiful pine forests, rocky slopes and open spaces with panoramic views of the central mountains. The last section is a short, steeper climb to a rocky plateau with views of Roque Nublo, Roque Bentayga and Pico de las Nieves.

However, if you’re not a trekking enthusiast or fancy seeing more places in one day, Roque Nublo can be visited on a round trip with a Polish guide 👉 check here.

Best time to visit

The most beautiful experience is at sunset – then the rocks turn orange and red, and the sun disappears behind the horizon, often above the clouds. But beware – after dark the temperature drops sharply, and descending after dark can be difficult. It is advisable to bring a headlamp and a warm jacket.

Season

  • Spring (March-May): almond trees are in bloom and the weather is ideal for trekking.
  • Autumn (September-November): fewer tourists, stable weather.
  • Winter (December-February): colder, but still pleasant – there may be fog or wind.

Nature around Roque Nublo

Roque Nublo is not just a rock – it is an entire mountain ecosystem. Surrounding it are forests of canary pine, endemic to the Canary Islands and resistant to fire and drought. You’ll also encounter wild shrubs of lavender, juniper and a variety of bird species. In spring, the area is drowned in flowers – one of the best places on the island for nature photography.

Legend and spiritual significance

There are many legends associated with Roque Nublo. The Guanches believed that the rock was a link between earth and heaven, a place of contact with the gods. To this day, many locals treat the place with reverence and speak of the “magic of Roque Nublo” – the silence, energy and sense of the vastness of nature. It’s a great place for a moment of reflection, meditation or just…. delight.

What else is worth seeing in the area

  1. Roque Bentayga – another sacred Guanche rock, with a viewpoint and archaeological museum.
  2. Tejeda – one of Spain’s most beautiful towns, famous for its almonds and local sweets.
  3. Cruz de Tejeda – the geographic center of the island, with the Parador Hotel and a beautiful viewpoint.
  4. Pico de las Nieves – the highest point in Gran Canaria, from which you will see Roque Nublo from a different perspective.

What to bring with you

  • Water (min. 1-1.5 l per person)
  • Snacks or fruit
  • Warm sweatshirt or jacket
  • Trekking or sports shoes with good grip
  • Sunscreen and a hat
  • Camera / camera phone
  • Offline map or app, in some places you may not have coverage

Mistakes to avoid

  1. Arrival at noon – the biggest crowd and harsh sun.
  2. No jacket – even in summer it can be cold.
  3. Leaving garbage – the area is protected, it is worth keeping it clean.
  4. Going down in the dark without a flashlight – potentially dangerous.

Practical information

  • Altitude: 1,813 meters above sea level.
  • Location: Parque Rural del Nublo
  • Entrance: free
  • Parking: La Goleta (free, limited number of spaces)
  • Toilets / food outlets: none – the closest in Tejeda or Ayacat.

How to take the best pictures
