Arucas is one of the most atmospheric towns in the north of Gran Canaria – a place where history, culture and local life intertwine into a unique whole. Although it is often referred to as the “city of rum,” Arucas has much more to offer and definitely deserves a place on the island’s list of highlights. <\/p>\n\n

Location<\/h3>\n\n

The town of Arucas is located in the north of Gran Canaria, just a short drive from the island’s capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It lies on a gentle hill surrounded by banana plantations and green valleys, making the area stand out against the drier southern areas of the island. <\/p>\n\n

History of the city<\/h3>\n\n

The history of Arucas dates back to pre-Hispanic times, when the area was inhabited by the Guanches, the original inhabitants of the Canary Islands. After the Spanish conquest of the island in the 15th century, Arucas began to develop as an important agricultural center, mainly through the cultivation of sugar cane. <\/p>\n\n

In the centuries that followed, the city gradually grew in stature, and its wealth was evident in its architecture, development of crafts and trade. Today, Arucas combines its historical heritage with a modern, local lifestyle. <\/p>\n\n

Culture and local traditions<\/h3>\n\n

Arucas is a city very attached to its traditions. Residents proudly cherish the local culture, music and cuisine. Walking around town, it’s easy to stumble upon small cafes, lively plazas and local bars where everyday Canarian life takes place. <\/p>\n\n

Cultural events<\/h3>\n\n

Arucas hosts many cultural and religious events throughout the year. Among the most important are fiestas in honor of the town’s patron saint San Juan Bautista, religious processions, local festivals and concerts held in town squares. Particularly colorful are the Carnival celebrations, which, although smaller than in Las Palmas, have a very authentic local character. <\/p>\n\n

Monuments and attractions<\/h3>\n\n

Arucas’ most recognizable landmark is the imposing San Juan Bautista Church<\/strong>, often referred to as the “Cathedral of Arucas.” This neo-Gothic temple, built of local volcanic stone, dominates the city skyline and is stunning both inside and out. <\/p>\n\n
