It is located on the west coast of the island, in the village of La Aldea de San Nicolás, which is famous for its fishing traditions, spectacular scenery and a unique local festival, the Fiesta del Charco.

If you want to see Gran Canaria beyond the hotel resorts and tourist crowds, this is where you’ll discover one of the most authentic parts of the island.

Where is Playa de La Aldea located

The beach is located in the west of the island, about 90 km from southern resorts such as Maspalomas and Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria.

The area is much less urbanized than the south of Gran Canaria. The road leading to the town leads through spectacular mountains and cliffs, making the trip itself one of the biggest attractions.

The nearest major city is the island’s capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, about 70 kilometers away.

What Playa de La Aldea looks like

The beach is about 300 meters long and consists mainly of dark sand and volcanic stones, which are characteristic of the island’s west coast. A natural, wild landscape and a peaceful atmosphere await you here. There are no large hotels or resorts around. There is an idyllic local climate, and in the evenings you can watch the beautiful sunset over the Atlantic.

Due to stronger waves and ocean currents, swimming is sometimes limited, but the location is ideal for walking, photography or relaxing away from the crowds.

Traditional fishing village by the beach

Next to the beach is the small fishing port of Puerto de La Aldea, where you can see the boats of local fishermen. Several small restaurants serve fresh fish and seafood – often caught the same day. The menu often features local Canarian specialties, such as:

papas arrugadas with mojo

fresh tuna

grilled sardines

squid

As a result, the area has retained the authentic atmosphere of a traditional Canarian village.

During the tour you will stop at one such restaurant, where you will sample local cuisine.

El Charco – a natural lagoon by the beach

One of the most distinctive sites at Playa de La Aldea is El Charco de La Aldea, a natural lagoon separated from the ocean by a small causeway of stones.

The lagoon is formed where sea water mixes with water from a nearby ravine. It is here that one of the most unusual events in Gran Canaria takes place.

Fiesta del Charco – an unusual celebration for locals

The village’s biggest tradition is the Fiesta del Charco, which takes place every year on September 11. During the festivities, hundreds of residents enter the El Charco lagoon and try to catch fish with their hands or baskets. This tradition refers to the ancient fishing methods used by the island’s first inhabitants.

This is one of the most authentic and local cultural events in Gran Canaria.

What to see in the Playa de La Aldea area

The western part of the island is full of spectacular natural sites.
