Canary Islands

Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are an archipelago of 7 islands located in the Atlantic Ocean. They delight with their diversity, subtropical climate, beautiful weather all year round and interesting history. For several years they have become a popular tourist destination, including among Poles. In this article you will learn more about each of the Islands, so you can decide which one is worth visiting.

Canary Islands – location

The archipelago consists of 7 main islands:Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, la Palma, La Gomera and el Hierro, and 6 smaller islets. The Canary Islands lie in the area of Macaronesia, in the Atlantic Ocean, west of Morocco and the Sahara.

Their geographical location makes for a unique climate, which is why they are said to be islands of eternal spring.

All of the Canary Islands are post-volcanic in nature, which means you’ll find varied landscapes – from Mars-like desert terrain to evergreen forests and mountains.

Tenerife

Tenerife is one of the two most popular Canary Islands. This is the island most often chosen by tourists as their tourist destination. It is often referred to as the “mecca of tourists”. Here you will find beautiful beaches, restaurants and hotels, as well as plenty of entertainment. But Tenerife is much more than that – it is here, and not in the Pyrenees as you might think, that you will find Spain’s highest peak (Pico del Teide, 3718 meters above sea level) or the ancient laurel forests of the Anaga mountains.

The island is conventionally divided into northern and southern parts. The south – eternally warm with beautiful beaches suitable for sunbathing. The north, on the other hand, is cooler, but with beautiful lush greenery, colonial towns such as La Laguna, and Puerto de la Cruz. Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is the second – next to Tenerife – most popular island of the archipelago. It is often referred to as “the continent in miniature”, as a huge variety of landscapes can be found in a relatively small area. The south of the island is dominated by sandy beaches and the famous Maspalomas dunes, while the central part is dominated by mountains with the characteristic Roque Nublo rock.

It is an excellent choice for both those looking for beach relaxation and those who enjoy active sightseeing. The island’s capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, impresses with its historic Vegueta district, rich history and the city’s Las Canteras beach, considered one of the best in Europe.

The island offers active attractions such as water sports, jeepney or quad rides, and even skydiving. And for those who like to learn more about history and culture, there are round trips (check out our offer 👉 here).

Lanzarote

Lanzarote is the most “lunar” of the Canary Islands. Its landscape has been shaped by volcanic eruptions, which have given the island a raw, almost surreal character. Timanfaya National Park, with its black lava and geothermal displays, is one of the most recognizable sites in the archipelago.

The island also impresses with its architectural harmony, thanks in large part to the artist César Manrique, who made sure that the buildings harmonized with nature. Lanzarote is an ideal destination for those who appreciate tranquility, unique views, art and vineyards located on volcanic soil in the La Geria region.

Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is primarily known for its beautiful, wide beaches and clear waters. It is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts – especially kitesurfing and windsurfing – due to favorable winds.

It is the driest island in the archipelago, with a desert-like landscape. As a result, Fuerteventura offers a calmer atmosphere and less crowded resorts than Tenerife or Gran Canaria. It is an excellent choice for those looking for relaxation, long walks on the beach and contact with nature. However, it is important to remember that it is a very windy island.

La Palma

La Palma, nicknamed “La Isla Bonita,” is considered one of the greenest and most natural of the Canary Islands. It is an island ideal for lovers of nature, trekking and tranquility. Here you will find dense forests, ravines and spectacular cliffs.

One of the highlights is the Caldera de Taburiente National Park, a huge volcanic crater with a network of hiking trails. La Palma is also one of the best places in the world for stargazing, thanks to its clear skies and strict light pollution regulations.

This island can be visited on a day trip from Tenerife (more info 👉 here)

La Gomera

La Gomera is a small, peaceful island that has retained its authentic character. Its heart is the UNESCO-listed Garajonay National Park, home to ancient laurel forests shrouded in mist.

The island is also famous for its unique whistled Silbo Gomero language, which used to be used by locals to communicate over long distances. La Gomera is an ideal destination for those who want to escape mass tourism and explore the Canaries in a more intimate setting.

El Hierro

El Hierro is the smallest and least populated of the main Canary Islands. It is a symbol of ecology and sustainability – the island relies heavily on renewable energy sources.

Here you will find rugged landscapes, natural volcanic pools and excellent diving conditions. El Hierro is for travelers looking for tranquility, wildlife and an alternative to popular resorts.

Which of the Canary Islands should you choose?

Each of the Canary Islands offers something different – from bustling Tenerife, beautiful Gran Canaria, volcanic Lanzarote, beachy Fuerteventura, green La Palma, authentic La Gomera to wild El Hierro. Choosing the right island depends on your expectations: leisure, active sightseeing, nature or tranquility.

One thing is certain – a vacation in the Canary Islands is a good choice, and there is something for everyone!
