Catamaran cruise to the Los Gigantes cliffs, 4.5h
About this experience
Four and a half hours by catamaran along the west coast of Tenerife, from Puerto Colón to the Los Gigantes cliffs and Masca beach. Pilot whales live in these waters all year round, so the chances of an encounter are very high. A Canarian lunch, drinks and time to swim in the Atlantic are included.
What you do on this cruise
The trip starts at Puerto Colón harbour in Costa Adeje. Arrive about 30 minutes early, and you will find the exact meeting time on your ticket.
The catamaran heads out in search of whales and dolphins. The guide explains where they live, what they eat, how they migrate and which species are most often seen here. Pilot whales are close to a sure thing, because they stay in the warm waters along this route. With a bit of luck you will also see dolphins, turtles or larger whales.
You then sail to the Los Gigantes cliffs, the highest in Europe, rising to 600 metres. Next comes Masca beach, below the former pirate village of the Guanches, the original people of Tenerife.
On board you are served a Canarian lunch, soft drinks and wine, beer and sangria. Before heading back to Costa Adeje there is time to sunbathe and swim in the ocean, looking out at the Barranco de Masca coastline.
Who this is for (and who it is not)
This is one of the few cruises you can comfortably take a small child on. The catamaran is large and steady, you can bring a pushchair on board, and the trip is also adapted for people with reduced mobility.
If you are after water sports and slides, this is not that cruise. Here the point is the animals, the cliffs and a calm half day on the water.
Practical information
The cruise lasts 4.5 hours and departs at 13:15. A Polish-speaking guide is on board on Tuesdays and Sundays, although on rare occasions illness can keep them ashore.
Guests staying in the south of the island, meaning Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos and Las Americas, get free transport from their hotel or nearby. Tick that option in the notes when booking and add your hotel name. From Puerto de la Cruz transport costs 9 euro per person and runs on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays, with a journey of about 1.5 hours each way.
Adults, meaning anyone over 11, pay 62 euro, children aged 4 to 11 pay 31 euro and under-3s sail free. Book at least two days ahead. Cancellation is free up to 72 hours before the start with a 100% refund.
Not sure whether your child will manage 4.5 hours on the water. Write to us and we will tell you honestly how it usually goes.
