Loro Park
About this experience
Loro Parque in Puerto de la Cruz is a ready-made plan for a whole day, with nothing to organise except getting there. Orcas, dolphins, sea lions, penguins and parrots each have their own show, and in between you walk through an aquarium and gardens full of tropical planting. Your QR-code ticket arrives by email, so you simply scan your phone at the gate.
What you do at Loro Parque
The park sits in Puerto de la Cruz on the north coast of Tenerife and is billed as the largest zoological park in Spain. The day is built around four shows: Orca Ocean, the dolphin show, the sea lion show and the parrot show that gave the park its name. Check the times as soon as you arrive, then plan everything else around them.
Between shows you have the aquarium and its marine life displays, the penguin house, and the section known as Jungle Park, where you can see tigers, gorillas and other exotic animals up close. The whole site doubles as a garden, so a good part of the day is simply walking among the planting.
Children get playgrounds, interactive zones and the Loro Parque Express train, which carries you across the park once legs start to give up. Several restaurants operate on site, from simple to themed, so there is no need to leave for lunch.
The park runs the Loro Parque Foundation and supports conservation projects for endangered species. Displays around the enclosures explain that work, which older children often find more interesting than the shows themselves.
Who it suits
This works well for families with children of any age and for anyone who likes animals and wants a calmer day on the north of the island. If you are after water slides and adrenaline, look elsewhere. In that case a combined ticket with Siam Park makes more sense, giving you two days of attractions at a lower price.
Practical details
The park opens daily, though hours change with the season. Within 24 hours of booking you receive a QR-code ticket by email with all the details, and the electronic version on your phone is enough. Write your hotel name in the order notes, because the transfer depends on it.
From Costa Adeje, Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos transfers run daily. Transfers from the Alcalá, Abama and Los Gigantes areas run on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and from Golf del Sur on Tuesdays and Fridays. A return transfer from the south of the island costs 19.5 euro and you select it on the order form. Staying in Puerto de la Cruz? The town train takes you to the park free of charge. Driving? Parking at the park costs around 4 euro for the day.
You can cancel free of charge up to 72 hours before the start and get a full refund, so you can book early and settle on the exact day later.
