About this experience

Five hours aboard the Shogun, a sailing ship built entirely from teak for a sheikh’s private use. You sail out to Los Gigantes, watch for whales along the way, and anchor below the cliffs for a swim in the ocean and lunch.

What you do on this cruise

You set off from Puerto Colón in Costa Adeje and spend five hours running along the rocky south-west coast of Tenerife. The Shogun is not a standard excursion catamaran but an oriental sailing ship in teak, with shaded seating and room to stretch out in the sun.

She sails under the yellow flag with the blue boat, the marking carried by vessels licensed for whale watching, so your chances of meeting pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins are as high as they get. The crew talk you through the marine mammals that live in these waters, so it is more than staring at the surface hoping for a fin.

The point of the trip is the Los Gigantes cliffs. The rock wall rises straight out of the ocean and reaches roughly 600 metres at its highest. From the deck you see the whole of it at once, which is impossible from land.

Below the cliffs the ship anchors in a small cove. That is the time for a swim, as the water off southern Tenerife stays between 17 and 24 degrees all year, and for lunch: paella with drinks, including wine, beer and soft drinks. If you avoid gluten or meat, tell us when you book and the galley will prepare a separate meal.

Who this is for (and who it is not)

It suits families with children and groups who want half a day together without anyone having to manage a schedule. Five hours with lunch and a swim fills the day on its own.

If you want a quick one-hour outing, or a private boat just for your own party, this is not it. And nobody can promise you whales. They are wild animals, and the flag means the best odds, not a certainty.
