Quad or buggy, how they differ and which to choose

Quads and buggies in Tenerife ride in a convoy behind a guide. Before setting off you get a briefing and protective gear, and you drive yourself. The tours fall into two groups, rides on tarmac up to Teide National Park and off-road riding.

Quad or buggy

Quads seat two and have a weight limit, usually 160 kg for both people. Buggies also come as two-seaters, but on some tours you can choose a four-seater. This matters for families, because in a four-seater buggy on the banana plantation tour a child from age 2 can ride as a passenger. On a quad the youngest passenger must be 7.

Up to Mount Teide

Three hours of riding and a climb to about 2,000 m above sea level. From the south of the island there are quads to Teide and buggies to Teide, and both tours also run as sunset versions, with quads and buggies. The buggy ride to Teide follows roads, so it is not off-road driving.

From the north there is the quad tour from Puerto de la Cruz, which ends at an altitude of 2,280 m.

Off-road

If you are after gravel and dust, choose the off-road buggy, 2 hours of which 40 minutes are on mountain paths and sandy tracks. In the north, the off-road quads from Puerto de la Cruz follow a similar route, with a half-hour off-road section in Los Realejos and a stop at the Mirador del Lance viewpoint.

FAQ

Quads and buggies, questions and answers

The driver must hold a valid category B driving licence and carry the physical card, as a photo on your phone is not enough. The passenger does not need any licence.

Children can ride as quad passengers from age 7, and on the sunset tour from age 10. In a two-seater buggy the passenger must be at least 8 years old and 135 cm tall, and on the sunset tour 10 years old. In a four-seater buggy on the banana plantation tour, children from age 2 can ride.

With young children, go for a four-seater buggy, because it is the only option where the whole family fits in one vehicle. For two people it depends on the route. Both vehicles go up to Teide, and the off-road buggy heads off-road from the south of the island. With quads, remember the weight limit for two people, usually 160 kg.

Bring a sweatshirt or jacket, even in summer. At 2,000 m it is noticeably colder than on the coast, and after sunset the temperature drops quickly.
