La Palma - island tour from Tenerife
About this experience
La Palma is the greenest of the Canary Islands and the only one where you can stand beside a lava flow that cooled just a few years ago. In one day you take in the island capital, the Tajogaite volcano and La Palma’s most important sanctuary, with the ferry and the coach doing the travelling for you.
What you will see on La Palma
Sightseeing starts once the ferry docks in Santa Cruz de La Palma. The historic centre of the capital is all cobbled streets, the carved wooden balconies typical of Canarian architecture, and Plaza de España with the old church of El Salvador.
From there you head to the Tajogaite volcano, formed during the eruption of 2021. It is a rare chance to see a landscape shaped within the current generation, and to hear how the eruption changed life in this part of the island. Fields of lava sitting right next to houses stay with you.
After the volcano there is a break for lunch in a local restaurant, included in the price. Afterwards you visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Snows, patron saint of La Palma. It is one of the island’s most important pilgrimage sites, set in the mountains with views over the surrounding valleys.
The day closes with the return to the port of Santa Cruz de La Palma and the ferry back to Tenerife.
Who this suits, and who it does not
This tour is guided in English, German and Spanish. If those work for you, it is one of the more rewarding full-day trips you can take from Tenerife.
The day is long and starts very early, so it is hard going with a small child. There is also no hotel transfer, which with a 7:45 meeting time means an early alarm and your own way to the port.
Practical details
Meet at 7:45 at the port of Los Cristianos, which you reach independently. Bring an ID card or passport, as you will not board the ferry without one. Children under 3 are charged 25 euros.
The mountains run cooler than the Tenerife coast, so a light fleece or jacket earns its place even on a hot day. The operator may adjust the route because of weather or road restrictions.
